The more dead space you have (damaged alveoli/repiratory bronchioles), the less CO2 will be leaving the lung.
Increased oxygen will dilute the expired CO2 since the inspired O2 is just filling these pockets and then with exhalation, it mixes with the expired CO2 from the functional alveoli. With COPD, you have more of these pockets. Dead space “is like a separate pocket” that fills in the lungs.Ventilation (exchange of CO2 and O2) is dependent on functional alveoli.So I watched the Boards and Beyond video on Ventilation and Perfusion (pretty much exactly what I needed to watch to understand this) again and here is what I’ve gathered: I’ve been looking it up too now because it’s been driving me crazy just like you.
